Gibuzale's Story
Sourced from the lush, volcanic slopes of Mount Elgon in Eastern Uganda, this coffee comes from the Gibuzale washing station, operated by Kyagalanyi Coffee Ltd and supported by more than 1,300 smallholder farmers in the surrounding communities.
Perched at around 1,900 metres above sea level, Gibuzale is one of the highest and most remote washing stations in the region. The cool mountain climate, rich soils, and careful processing combine to produce coffees of exceptional clarity and character.
Farmers in the area typically cultivate small plots of around one hectare, often alongside subsistence crops such as matooke bananas, beans, and fruit trees. Coffee remains their most important source of income, and the Kyagalanyi programme provides training, agricultural support, and infrastructure to help farmers improve quality and sustainability.
The coffee is made using a fully washed process. Ripe cherries are delivered to the washing station, where they are pulped on the same day, fermented for around 12 hours, washed, and then carefully dried on raised beds and drying tables until the beans reach optimal moisture.
In the cup, this Ugandan coffee showcases the elegance that high-altitude East African coffees are known for. You can expect lively fruit notes of blackberry, balanced by the delicate sweetness of honey and a bright lift of lemon zest.
The result is a clean, expressive cup that works beautifully across multiple brewing methods — from pour-over and filter brewing to balanced espresso.
